At our shipyard, we recently completed the biannual qualification of our welding team, audited directly by RINA, the international classification society. The goal: ensuring that every tugboat and barge we build or repair can withstand the torsional loads specific to the Paraguay-Paraná Waterway.
What is RINA?
RINA (Registro Italiano Navale) is one of the oldest and most respected classification societies in the world, a member of IACS (International Association of Classification Societies). Its core role is to audit, inspect, and certify the safety, quality, and structural integrity of vessels, shipyards, and marine equipment.
RINA’s key functions in the naval sector:
- Personnel and Process Qualification: audits and certifies that welders, welding procedures (WPS), and materials meet high-strength technical standards.
- Vessel Classification: reviews the design, construction, and repair of barges, tugboats, and vessels to certify their seaworthiness.
- Periodic Audits: conducts regular inspections, such as our team’s biannual assessment, to keep operating permits valid with maritime and fluvial authorities.
- Regulatory Assurance: ensures compliance with IMO (International Maritime Organization) conventions and local fluvial navigation regulations.
Holding this kind of endorsement carries real weight for national and international shipowners evaluating a shipyard: it’s objective evidence of sound personnel and process management, a legal safeguard protecting the manufacturer’s liability, and a technical credential backing the value of the finished product.
RINA is also one of the twelve members of IACS, whose classification, construction, and compliance rules cover over 90% of the world’s cargo tonnage. Being part of that international standard puts our shipyard on par with what the world’s largest shipowners demand.

Applicable standards
- Standards Applied: Compliance with Part D of the RINA Rules (Materials and Welding) and ISO 9606-1.
- Technical Testing: WPS (Welding Procedure Specification) verification, visual inspection, and non-destructive testing of welds.
